Exterior

Anne Hathaway’s house was painstakingly redesigned by Gramercy Design to utilize every square inch, replicate original and period moldings, and seamlessly integrate modern conveniences. All of the windows are new in-swing French casements, and the white oak floors are in a classic herringbone pattern. The Les Misérables star and her actor-producer husband recently renovated the coveted south-facing terrace, while original period features inside have been restored or replicated to create character.

Living room

One enters the penthouse via a private key-locked elevator, which opens to an elegant gallery leading to the open-plan living, dining, and kitchen areas. Light floods into the living area in particular, which overlooks the beautiful terrace.  A perfect space for entertaining, the light-filled living room features an ethanol fireplace and opens to the terrace: an outdoor oasis offering indoor-outdoor living, dining space for up to eight, a kitchen, areas for lounging, integrated lighting, audio, and irrigation, and views of the area’s landmarks, including the Dakota and the San Remo.

Kitchen

The state-of-the-art kitchen boasts 18-foot ceilings with a skylight, which makes it as bright and airy as the living room. The actress has furnished it tastefully with Lumix quartzite countertops, cleverly concealed cabinetry, appliances from Miele and a 30-inch electric range. A photo posted by on Open shelving is kept neat and attractive with a selection of favorite ceramics on show. The white handleless cabinetry is a classic choice that won’t date – instead it creates a streamlined effect that makes the room feel still larger.  In the home’s private wing, the sunlit master suite features a skylight with electric shades, a walk-in closet, and bath with a freestanding tub and stylish hardware from Waterworks and Barber Wilsons. The well-proportioned second bedroom is accompanied by a full bath clad in Aurora Blue marble. See: Inside the stunning former Bahamas estate of Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII

Garden

The terrace was landscaped by Jeffrey Erb Landscape Design, with the intention to feel like an extension of the living room. Jeffrey’s unique attention to detail for outdoor spaces in an urban environment combined with his installation and horticulture experience allow him to create some of the most luxurious private residential gardens in New York City. Large containers are planted with Japanese acer and box hedging, while shading on the pergola provides some relief from hot New York summers – and adds to the feeling of privacy.  You can view the property at Sotheby’s International Realty (opens in new tab).
