George Shultz was an American diplomat, economist, and businessman. He is one of only two people to have held four different Cabinet-level posts throughout his career. George died in February last year at the age of 100. Together with his wife, San Francisco Chief of Protocol Charlotte Shultz, he combined the two penthouses to create a mansion-style home. The renovation left the couple with one of the world’s best homes – complete with ample space for entertaining and a view across the Golden Gate Bridge. Here, we tour the properties. Designed by the developer Joseph Eichler, The Summit (where the penthouses are located) is one of the few high-rise buildings on the northern end of San Francisco. Its construction is said to have inspired the city to pass height-limiting legislation – meaning they have unrivaled views of the cityscape. Both the north and south penthouses exhibit similar, sleek decorating ideas – seen primarily through their neutral color palette and modernist pieces. The main living space is subtly furnished with cream sofas and curated houseplants that allow the city’s colors to make their statement. The cool, cream scheme continues into the open-plan kitchen ideas – complete with light cabinetry and a marble countertop. The cooking area flows into a breakfast nook, where the circular glass table and rattan chairs bring a retro aesthetic to the sunlit space. The primary suite maintains these room color ideas through its beige scheme – accentuated by the large mirrors that reflect the city throughout the room. The bedroom has two adjoining spa-like bathrooms, three walk-in closets, a dressing room, and a private balcony with views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. In the south penthouse, there is another gourmet kitchen, plus an upper-level mezzanine with a wet bar with space for entertaining. The primary bedroom boasts stylish bedroom ideas that lead into a marble-clad bathroom and two walk-in closets. Both penthouses include grand staircases and central elevators. The penthouses are located on Russian Hill, an upscale postcode that is most famous for Lombard Street.
