See: Bathroom ideas – design your perfect space with these inspirational spaces
In this bathroom, the owner wanted to combine their love of a few varying interior styles. The final result, created by interior designer Justine Hodgson-Parker using pieces from CP Hart (opens in new tab), is one of artful eclecticism. Here are five design lessons we’ve learned from Justine’s jaw-dropping scheme…
1. Artwork can inspire the theme
‘This is the family bathroom in a prestigious Tunbridge Wells, England property by famed architect Decimus Burton,’ says Justine. Explaining the need to work in varying interiors styles, Justine continues: ‘the owner is really into art and loves to mix up classic and industrial styles, with a bit of retro pop and vintage thrown in. Each room began with her choosing the art, which then directed the color palette.’
2. Enlarge the shower for added luxury
Working out how to plan a bathroom can be tricky at the best of times, and the same applies when redesigning an existing space. ‘I kept to the original plumbing positions – luckily, the WC is discreetly sited. There has to be a very good reason to move concealed pipework, especially in older homes,’ notes Justine. ‘The main change, layout-wise, was the shower area, which I made much bigger to achieve a sense of luxury.’ Our shower room ideas give more pointers on planning in a walk-in space like this.
3. Have some fun with pattern
Bathroom design can easily become a little serious, especially when trying to balance varying styles and references. To bring some design fun back into the space, remember that pattern can be your best friend. Bathroom floor tile ideas can be especially impactful. Here, both the terrazzo floor tiles and the bath stripes add dynamism and levity into this highly designed room. Limiting the color palette ensures that everything remains chic and flows together easily.
4. Include vintage touches for character
‘The basin vanity is one of my favourite pieces from C.P. Hart’s own collection – especially the elegant cabriole legs,’ says Justine. ‘We went for high-gloss plum doors to tie in with the nearby art and create contrast against the matt tiles. The chandelier also has a cool salvaged vibe and is IP44-rated, perfect for bathroom use.’ Our bathroom lighting ideas will show you how to create more impact with your fittings.
5. Play with texture as well as color

Playing with surface textures is great for adding depth to a space, and balancing the overall appearance. For example, the shower screen here creates a subtle texture change. ‘The Crittall-style frame looks fabulous with fluted glass and far more interesting than a standard screen,’ says Justine. Similarly, introducing textiles can relax the more masculine feel of harder metal or ceramic surfaces. ‘A pretty lace voile by Pearl Lowe – tinged in pink around the edges – softens the large window.’
